Faasai Resort and Spa will be organising tours to Khao Kitchakut during the season for guests who interested in participating in this remarkable Thai Buddhist festival. Every year thousands of Thais make a pilgrimage to visit the mountain, where they pay their respects at the Buddha footprint, a natural formation in a rock on the summit of the mountain.
The manager of the resort, Bronwen Evans, a New Zealander who co-owns the resort with her Thai husband Surin, says Khao Khitchakut is the most significant landmark in Chanthaburi and the festival offers many attractions including a walk past giant trees covered in lianes in the virgin forest, spectacular views over the province and unusual rock formations.
?The most spectacular sight is a giant boulder perched on the summit next to the footstep of the Buddha. Along the path visitors can also see huge rocks and boulders in the shape of a turtle, tiger, chedi and elephant, as well as many beautiful Buddhist statues and shrines.?
The narrow path to the top, which is only accessible by foot, is strewn with marigolds and lined with incense.
?When we first visited Khao Khitchakut, around ten years ago, Surin described it as the staircase to heaven,? said Bronwen. ?I was so impressed, I said I wanted to move to this amazing province with the mountains and the sea, and that?s why we built the resort here.?
She says during the festival there is also a lively market at the base of the mountain, with local produce on sale such as orchids, honey, herbs, religious amulets and herbal medicines.
The trip that the resort organises to visit the mountain and festival takes about five hours and costs about $ 120 US.
Bronwen says, apart from Khao Khitchakut, Chanthaburi is well endowed with national parks and waterfalls.
?The most popular waterfall with our visitors is Namtok Pliew, where there is a moss-covered chedi erected by a king of Thailand. Guests can feed beans to giant carp, bathe under the waterfall and swim with the fishes. For those interested in trekking, Khao Chamao has a series of waterfalls with beautiful rocky pools set amidst virgin forest and Khao Soi Dao is the highest mountain peak in Chanthaburi where energetic trekkers can hike up the many tiered waterfall takes visitors through splendid forest and gain a glimpse of many rare animals and plants.?
